Saturday Matinee

Saturday Matinee 26 – The Make Believers

This is a crowdfunded documentary that focuses on the coverage in the Scottish Independence referendum debate.

The parts I found particularly interesting are those about the tactics of the No campaign in the Quebec 1995 referendum. Those parts should really be paid close attention by Yes campaigners and activists in the run-up to our referendum… and start thinking of strategies to counteract…

Saturday Matinee 23 – Control Room

This is an interesting documentary from 2004 about the Al-Jazeera network.

It focuses on a few different areas such as Al Jazeera’s role in Arab society, bias in the media and notably the killing of Al-Jazeera journalists in Iraq.

Saturday Matinee 22 – Bush Family Fortunes

I’m sure that like me, you still occasionally wonder how someone like Bush managed to fail upwards for his entire life.

Well, one of the reasons is simply money. This BBC Three documentary from a few years back throws some light on how that family got to be so rich…

Saturday Matinee 21 – Taking Liberties

Civil liberties have been in the news again a lot recently. At the UK level Teresa May floated the idea of withdrawing from the European Convention on Human Rights and in Scotland there has been much discontent at the Offensive Behaviour Bill.

It’s interesting to take a look back then to the previous Labour Government’s attack on civil liberties and this documentary makes a pretty chilling point. It is of course still relevant as many of the laws they discuss are still being used every day, though the ID card scheme was scrapped.

So here’s the film. Prepare to get angry.

Saturday Matinee 20 – Judgement Day: Intelligent Design On Trial

This documentary starts with a rather simplistic tone but it improves as it goes on.

The trial and surrounding events are the interesting parts, and the documentary doesn’t disappoint there.

A few years back in the United States, certain groups were trying to push the “teach the controversy” line with regards to Evolution Vs Intelligent Design, despite the fact that there is no controversy, and Intelligent Design is wrong.

The attempt to shoehorn creationism into the schools via intelligent design failed, but not before the whole thing had gone to court.

It’s a very interesting documentary, and should show you what to expect the next time all this comes up again…
