Indifferent to Truth

“America has had 45 Presidents, but never before have we had one that is completely indifferent to the truth. Donald Trump makes Richard Nixon look like Diogenes”.  – Denis Hayes (Coordinator of the first Earth Day)

In case you missed it, here is Donald Trump claiming, in the present tense, to be good friends with Pavarotti.

As the Independent pointed out however, Pavarotti’s widow and family had other ideas on the matter, had asked him to stop using Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma at Trump rallies and released this statement…

“As members of his immediate family, we would like to recall that the values of brotherhood and solidarity which Luciano Pavarotti expressed throughout the course of his artistic career are entirely incompatible with the world view offered by the candidate Donald Trump”.

Finally, the Independent also noted something about their relationship…

The apparent tensions between Mr Trump and Mr Pavarotti reportedly started before his death, in 2002, when the New York billionaire hired the opera legend for a concert at one of his Atlantic City casinos. After a lackluster performance from the ageing singer, Mr Trump demanded a refund.

Great friends indeed.

Scottish Independence Podcast 154 – McSmörgåsbord

BUKIobwCYAAKGqQ.jpg largeAt the moment there isn’t really enough talk about choices. Everything  is being presented as either a future in Brexit UK (with all the lack of choices that entails), or an independent future in the EU.

However there are more options than that available. If one looks to Scandinavia it is possible to see many different types of engagement and activity with Europe, from full membership and trying to change things from within, to various kinds of halfway house.

In this talk presented here in the 154th episode of The Scottish Independence Podcast, Lesley Riddoch outlines the options, and there are many of them that are appealing.

Hope you enjoy.

Scottish Independence Podcast 152 – Crying ‘Wolf!’

C7TQ43xX4AEbjevFor the 152nd episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I’ve pulled together some of the recent notable comments by some pro-indy folks and by some unionists.

The Tories seem to want to deny everything, some people are trying to ramp up the hysteria and others are trying to calm it all down. In the middle of it all Gordon Brown made another intervention, and then went away again without anyone noticing.

Apart from that, the BBC edited Nicola Sturgeon rather sneakily, and there are two comments, both radically different in tone, from interested parties south of the border.

Hope you enjoy.

Scottish Independence Podcast 151 – Adam Ramsay

Unlock+Magna+Carta+PRINT019For the 151st episode of the Scottish Independence Podcast I managed to get Adam Ramsay back on the line after a failed recording a couple of months back. Adam is a writer and activist and is the co-editor of Open Democracy.

We talked about the wider context in which the argument over the timing of the second independence referendum is being played out in. We also spoke about the hysterical reactions of some unionist commentators – why are they so furious and how should we react to it.

Hope you enjoy.
