Saturday Matinee 39 -In The King of Prussia, The Trial of the Plowshares 8

Father Berrigan once said he had been arrested more times than he remembers, but fewer times than he should have.

I’m not a religious man but since Daniel Berrigan passed away a couple of weeks ago, I have wanted to put something with him up on the site.

The only priest ever to get on the FBI’s most wanted list, and founding member of the plowshares movement, his is a life well worth looking at.

This film/documentary recreates the trial of a group of plowshares activists.

They trespassed onto the General Electric nuclear missile facility in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, where they damaged nuclear warhead nose cones and poured blood onto documents and files. They were arrested and charged with over ten different felony and misdemeanor counts.

Martin Sheen plays the judge, who doesn’t come across well, and the activists play themselves.

An interesting note about the film is that the director originally did not want to be involved as he did not share the religious beliefs of the activists but was eventually convinced to make it.
