Media Studies Friday – 5 – Choose Your Mexican

God and TrumpI’m sure you caught Donald Trump’s comments about Mexico/Mexicans. Just in case you didn’t, here’s the part that rightly got everyone angry…

“[Mexico] are sending people that have lots of problems, and they are bringing those problems to us. They are bringing drugs, and bringing crime, and their rapists,” the business mogul said.

An interesting part of this for me was how the supposedly leftwing side of the mainstream media responded to this and how the line they tried to push differed greatly from what became the most populare response. The Guardian and others focussed on the story of the man in the first video below, which was also popular on youtube. You’ll notice that in order to show just how wrong Trump is, it tells the story of an undocumented Mexican trying to make his road into the acceptable middle-class, starting with his hardworking family putting him through university and so on. Good luck to him, but as much as anything else it is an attempt to sanitise Mexican immigrants by selling a particular vision of the world…

However, going by the number of views, this altogether more direct response from a Mexican labourer, whilst he is actually working outside in dangerously hot conditions, was preferred by the public at large.

There is a media studies lesson in there somewhere. Why did the public prefer the unfiltered labourer to the glossy sanitised story?
