When we get sent one of those funny videos that go round from time to time we usually, laugh for a second and show our mates and that is the end of it.

The one about the gay referee got me thinking and looking.

It seems that his antics were not just flamboyance. He was refereeing at a time when there was a lot of violence at Brazilian football matches and his unique version of clowning around actually helped to entertain the crowd in such a way that it helped to calm down the violence.

Unfortunately he apparently died of complications from AIDS in 1995.

But it all shows that you find heroes in unlikely places.
